Like most people, I thought that self-defence was about learning physical skills to deal with potential attackers. However, after many years of training in the physical side of self-defence, I realised that the core of self-defence is actually about knowing how to avoid dangerous situations, how to spot the signs that a situation is developing, how to de-escalate a situation, and as a last resort, how to physically deal with a situation.
